On Tuesday, an attack targeted the convoy of the US Consulate in the Ogbaru local government area of Anambra State. The incident occurred in three different locations: Osuche, Ogbakuba, and Umunankwo. Tragically, several individuals lost their lives in the attack, including two policemen. Additionally, two policemen were abducted by the assailants and remain missing.
Hon. Afam Ogene, the elected representative for the Ogbaru federal constituency in the House of Representatives, who hails from Obeagwe community, provided details about the attack. He stated that the US Consulate vehicle was assaulted and set on fire near St. Patrick's Farms along the Umunankwo-Osomala road. Furthermore, three other vehicles were burned, one in Ogbakuba and two at Amiyi junction, with the occupants of these vehicles also being set ablaze.
According to reports, at least 10 people have been confirmed dead, and the whereabouts of two policemen are still unknown. The incident has instilled fear in the affected communities, causing residents to flee. Mr. Arinze Nzeli, a youth leader in the area, explained that his relatives and many other residents from Ochuche and Ogbakuba had fled their communities in the middle of the night to avoid arrest.
In response to the attack, numerous individuals have sought refuge in farms across the River Niger for their safety. The presence of officials from the US Consulate in the community was usually accompanied by photo sessions and community projects. However, the security provided during these visits was reportedly insufficient.
