Gunman Kills Three in New Mexico Shooting Spree Before Being Fatally Shot by Police

 

In a tragic incident in the town of Farmington, New Mexico, an 18-year-old gunman opened fire, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. The shooting took place on Monday, leaving several others wounded, including two police officers.

Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers encountered a chaotic situation, with the gunman actively firing at people in the neighborhood, as described by Baric Crum, deputy chief of operations for the Farmington Police Department. Four officers swiftly responded and were able to stop the assailant's actions, ultimately leading to the suspect's demise. Regrettably, three civilians lost their lives before the suspect was neutralized.

While nine people were reported injured, excluding the suspect, it remains unclear if this number includes the three fatalities. The authorities have not released information regarding the identities of the victims or the motive behind the shooting. Police believe the gunman acted alone in the incident.

Following the gun violence, several public schools in Farmington initiated security lockdowns to ensure the safety of students and staff. New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham expressed her condolences, stating that this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of how gun violence continues to claim lives in the state and the nation.

Notably, Farmington was previously affected by a deadly high school shooting in December 2017, where two students were killed before the gunman took his own life.

This incident adds to the alarming statistics of mass shootings in the United States, with at least 225 recorded so far this year. Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit research group, reports that since the beginning of 2023, over 14,600 Americans have lost their lives due to gun-related violence, including hundreds of children and teenagers. These fatalities encompass suicides, homicides, accidental discharges, and instances of defensive gun use.

The report reveals that 93 children aged up to 11 years old and 522 teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 were among the victims. Despite public support for stricter firearms sales laws, as indicated by a Gallup poll from October 2022, politicians have struggled to reach a consensus on this pressing issue.
