An Egyptian security officer allegedly pursuing drug smugglers on the Israeli-Egyptian border on June 3 resulted in the loss of three Israeli soldiers' lives.
The lifeless bodies of a male and a female soldier were discovered at their guard post after 6 am when their unit members failed to receive any response through their radios and went to check on them.
As Israeli forces were deployed to conduct a thorough search operation in the area, renewed gunfire erupted hours later.
This exchange led to the reported death of the Egyptian police officer, as well as the third Israeli soldier.
Colonel Gharib Abdel-Hafez Gharib, the spokesperson for the Egyptian army, confirmed that the shooter belonged to their country's security forces. He stated via Twitter, "A member of our security personnel responsible for observing the international border line engaged in the pursuit of a suspect involved in drug smuggling operations. During the pursuit, the officer crossed the Egyptian-Israeli border line, resulting in a firefight that led to the tragic deaths of three Israeli border guards, the injury of two others, and the death of the crossing officer."
The Egyptian official also mentioned that an immediate investigation was initiated, with necessary security measures taken to prevent any further breaches. Swift legal actions were implemented as well.
The incident is currently being investigated by Tel Aviv, focusing on how the Egyptian soldier managed to infiltrate Israel. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant expressed his trust in the soldiers and commanders, affirming that the army will carry out the required investigation. He stated on Twitter, "We have faith in the dedication and resilience of our soldiers and commanders who continue to fulfill their duties."
